National Museum of Scotland : Energy Zone gallery
We were commissioned to design and build the software for six information stations for the new Connect Gallery in Edinburgh, an exhibition that is designed to have wide appeal as an important new educational resource.
Our Solution
The information stations, covering topics such as space travel, energy and power, genetics, robotics and transport, are touch-screen installations that allow visitors to find out more about the world around them. Visitors are able to watch short videos and animations, vote on topical issues and take part in quizzes.
The project involved a 3-day video shoot of scientists and experts explaining their areas of specialism in a language that a child could understand. We also had to learn about the intricate workings of the Wylam Dilly steam engine so we could bring it to life using animation. The content for the installations is programmed in XML and a template system enables museum staff to change text, copy and the structure of the software as required.
